Labor Day NC Weather | Severe Storms to Pound Central North Carolina This Long Weekend

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — Rain played a major role in central North Carolina on Monday morning.

This comes after severe thunderstorms late Sunday. ABC11 meteorologist Steve Stewart said the rain did not bring a significant chance of severe storms and that they will clear out of the area by the afternoon.

A tree fell on Leadmine Road near Middlebrook Road, knocking down several power lines, leaving hundreds of people in the area without power.

Power has been restored and the roads are open again.

Conditions will improve later. Last year Labor Day reached 99 degrees, but this year temperatures will only reach the low 80s.

“As the cold front moves northwest, it will be generally cloudy, humid and wet,” Stewart said.

Weekend rain

The Labor Day weekend brought severe storms to some parts of the viewing area.

A pair of severe thunderstorms moved through central North Carolina Sunday afternoon and evening as a cold front moved into the region, dropping record rainfall at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Damaging winds caused fallen trees in some places, and street flooding in other places.

A flash flood warning for Wake County was extended until 11 p.m., then a flood watch remained in effect until 2 a.m.

Flooded streets and fallen trees were seen in parts of the lookout on Sunday as heavy storms passed through.

Flash flood warnings were also in effect for Durham, Granville and Orange counties for much of the evening.

Severe storms also hit Durham, Orange, Franklin and Wake counties Friday afternoon. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., the storms brought heavy rain, lots of lightning and strong wind gusts.

Several trees were blown down and multiple fires started, including one that damaged three homes in northwest Raleigh.

Looking ahead

A high pressure area is moving over the northeast and will bring cooler air. Temperatures will be below average, around 21 degrees Celsius.

Tuesday looks to be sunnier and more pleasant with highs around 80 degrees. Cloud cover will increase on Wednesday.

There is a chance of rain on Thursday evening, Friday and Saturday morning.
