‘The ‘Burbs’ – Keke Palmer to star in TV series based on Joe Dante’s 1989 classic

Joe Dante’s black comedy favorite The ‘suburbs’ is heading to the small screen with a TV series adaptation for PeacockAnd Keke Palmer (No) will play the lead role in the series.

Variety reports that The ‘suburbs’ was ordered in series directly by Peacock. Celeste Hughey (“Palm Royale,” “Dead to Me,” “High Fidelity”) adapts Dante’s film for television.

Here’s a particularly cool bit from the website’s report: “The series will be filmed on the Universal Studios backlot, just like the movie.” The show’s official synopsis gives a sneak peek…

“Situated in the contemporary suburbs, The ‘suburbs’ follows a young couple who return to their husband’s childhood home.

“Their world is turned upside down when new neighbors move in next door, revealing old secrets about the cul-de-sac, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet neighborhood.”

Seth MacFarlane will serve as executive producer, along with Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment.

Keke Palmer stars in the lead role and is also an executive producer.

The original Joe Dante film starred Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun and Corey Feldman. The film revolved around aA stressed-out suburbanite and his neighbors become convinced that the new family in the neighborhood is part of a murderous Satanic cult.

Brian Keiper celebrated his 35th anniversary The ‘suburbs’ here on Bloody Disgusting earlier this year. He wrote: “Joe Dante had made horror comedies before—Piranha (1978), The Crying (1981), and Gremlins (1984) certainly qualify, but The ‘suburbs’ was something else. It is primarily a comedy, filled with often over-the-top absurdist humor, with horror woven through it like the dark threads in a tapestry that give the film its entirely unique character.”
