Concerns Over NFL Game in Brazil

The NFL has been active worldwide for years. We have seen NFL games in England, Germany and Mexico. That will continue this season, starting on Friday night when the Green Bay Packers take on the Philadelphia Eagles at the Corinthians Arena in São Paulo.

It should be a great game, but there are concerns about the safety of players, fans, team personnel and more.

Our Hondo S. Carpenter Sr. and The Spun’s Matt Hladik discussed these concerns on a recent episode of the “Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast.”

“I get a text from a friend of mine, he plays for another team,” Carpenter said. “… He says, ‘Did you hear anything about canceling the game in Brazil? And bringing it back to America?’ And I didn’t say anything. … He’s talking about (how) there’s a lot of concern among NFL players, especially after Ricky Pearsall got shot in San Francisco. I didn’t know this, but apparently they’re telling the players … to stay in their hotels. There’s a lot of players who are saying, listen, if we’re going to go to a place that’s not safe, maybe we shouldn’t go there to grow the game.”

“We had a report recently that there were some calls, even from fans or people who were publicly saying that maybe it would be wiser to cancel the game and bring it back to America,” Hladik said. “I think the NFL, as you said, has made it a point to grow the sport and expand its footprint overseas. They were going to play games in London, they were going to play games in Germany, they had some games in Mexico City. Now they’re going to go to Brazil. I think player safety should always be your number one concern. And you’re going to have some fans who are going to make the trip from America to go to the game. … You think about the NFL personnel first, but you have to take that into consideration as well. I’m assuming the game will go on as scheduled at this point. But I don’t blame any player, coach, family. Anybody for being a little bit concerned. And I’m just wondering if the NFL, even if they come out of this safely and there’s no issues, will they change their opinion or their approach to playing in other locations in the future.”
