Colorado

The Colorado Buffaloes enter the second year of the Coach Prime era under head coach Deion Sanders hoping to improve on last season’s 4-8 record. In 2023, Sanders’ program gained national attention when he transferred much of the team through the transfer portal and the Buffaloes got off to a 3-0 start, including a Week 2 win over Nebraska.

The success didn’t last long in Boulder, with Colorado winning just one game the rest of the season after Week 3. This offseason, coach Sanders has again lost and gained a lot of players in the transfer portal, and the program is hoping those transfers will pay off in helping star players Shedeur Sanders (Deion’s son) and Travis Hunter lead the Buffaloes to bowl qualification.

Sanders could help Colorado against Nebraska

Vaughn Dalzell, Eric Froton and Brad Thomas look at the game that sees Colorado travel to Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers and whether the Buffaloes have the firepower to keep up offensively.

Sanders is a special talent at quarterback with aspirations of being a first-round draft pick next spring; Hunter is similarly special as an impact player on both sides of the ball, making incredible catches from wide and making crucial plays in the defensive secondary. But the lines are a problem for Colorado, and the fundamental issues were on display in the team’s opener last week, when the Buffaloes claimed a 31-26 win over North Dakota State. Playing along the lines will have to be a focus against a much stronger Nebraska team.

Nebraska

Like Colorado, Nebraska is entering its second year under its head coach as Matt Rhule looks to repeat the success of the program turnarounds he’s had at Temple and Baylor over the past decade. Rhule took Temple from 2-10 in his first year to 6-6 in Year 2; he took Baylor from 1-11 to 7-6. Nebraska went 5-7 in his first season last year, so any improvement there would put the Cornhuskers in contention for a bowl. But with a favorable schedule and a potential rising star at quarterback, the Nebraska faithful are hoping for a six-plus win season in 2024.

That quarterback is a true freshman Dylan Raiolawho switched his contract with Georgia last winter to play for Nebraska, where his father Dominic played on the offensive line in the 1990s before spending 14 years with the Detroit Lions. Raiola was a consensus top-ten recruit, and his decision to come to Lincoln immediately changed expectations for the Husker offense. In Week 1 against UTEP, Raiola threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns; the Huskers didn’t top 200 passing yards in any game last season.

Nebraska is also hoping for a strong defense this weekend. The defensive unit – traditionally known as “the Blackshirts” because of the black jerseys that starters receive – features a core of players including defensive tackle Nash Hutmacher and defensive end Ty Robinson who can make the difference against a struggling Colorado offensive line.

Top candidates for Coach of the Year 2024

Joshua Perry thinks Kyle Whittingham will lead Utah to a first-round bye after winning the Big 12 Championship, while Nicole Auerbach believes Matt Rhule will help Nebraska secure its first bowl spot since 2016.
