Angel Reese to miss remainder of WNBA season with wrist injury

CNN

Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese, who leads the WNBA in total rebounds per game and offensive rebounds per game this season, will miss the rest of the season with a wrist injury.

The Sky made the announcement Saturday night. It’s a major blow to Chicago, which currently sits in the eighth and final playoff spot, with the Atlanta Dream, Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings still in the race.

The Sky have six regular season games left on the schedule.

“What a year. I never thought the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe God said they needed a taste of what they’re about to see in year 2 lol,” Reese said in posts on X and Instagram, referencing the 3-pointer she made in the fourth quarter of her team’s 92-78 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday.

“I showed that I belong in this league, even when no one else believed in me. All I ever wanted was to get to the W and make an impact. I can confidently say that I did that and I will strive to continue to do so. I am filled with emotion right now that I have a season-ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what lies ahead.”

In Friday’s win against the Sparks, Reese finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds. She has averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game this season.

“Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I can finally give myself a physical and mental break. God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers,” Reese said.

Reese, who was selected seventh overall in this year’s WNBA draft, made history in her rookie season.

On September 1, the former Louisiana State University star broke the WNBA single-season record for rebounds, surpassing Sylvia Fowles, who retired after the 2022 season, as the league’s leading player in rebounding.

Reese also broke the single-season record for offensive rebounds, while already becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to record 20 double-doubles and the most consecutive double-doubles (15) in league history.

Reese had 26 double-doubles this season, becoming one of two players in league history to do so in a single year.
