Today’s weather forecast: Met Office warns more than a month’s worth of rain will fall in southern Britain in two days

From warm sunshine to floods: Unpredictable UK storm hits city unexpectedly

More than half a month’s worth of rain fell in southern England and Wales over two days up to and including Friday evening.

For the second day in a row, a yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office as the wet weather continued and heavy rains moved across the Channel from France. However, by Saturday morning it had eased again.

There were warnings of flooding, power outages and travel disruption, with outbreaks of heavy rainfall that were “persistent” in some areas and “particularly heavy” in others.

For many, the weekend will start sunny and dry on Saturday morning, after which small showers will move westwards across the country.

Matthew Lehnert, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Repeated showers are likely to occur across southern Britain over the coming days, with some localised impacts into the weekend.

“Further north it’s a different story as high pressure brings warmer and sunnier conditions with above average temperatures, particularly in parts of western Scotland. Eastern areas are likely to be cooler and cloudier at times as winds blow off the North Sea.”

‘North-South Divide’

The Met Office said there was a split in the weather between North and South, with the South seeing “pulses of heavy rain” over the coming days and the North being drier and warmer.

This is expected to be the story in the UK all weekend

The east of the UK will be cooler and cloudier, while the west will be warmer and sunnier. In the north-west of Scotland, temperatures of up to 27 degrees Celsius can be expected.

A weather warning is in place all Friday and will remain in place until 02:00 on Saturday. This warning applies to parts of south-west England and south Wales.

Mixed weather weekend ahead

The Met Office says it will be a ‘mixed outlook’ for the UK this weekend.

Heavy rain showers are expected to continue in the south of the UK over the coming days.

But further north the sun will shine as temperatures rise ‘well above average’ and could climb into the mid-20s in western Scotland on Saturday.

In the east it is cooler and cloudier due to the wind blowing from the North Sea.

Next week will see “fresher, cooler temperatures” sweep across the UK, with the north facing a “noticeably cool” spell by midweek.

Rain may cause traffic disruption and flooding

Heavy rainfall could cause disruption to travel and flooding, according to the Met Office.

After Thursday’s rains, there is a greater chance of traffic disruption due to flooding. There is a small chance of power outages and a small chance that some communities will be cut off by flooded roads and high water, which is life-threatening.

Commuters and motorists are warned to expect spray and flash flooding, which could lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures.

Three flood warnings remain after three were lifted

The Environment Agency has lifted three flood warnings.

These included: the area of the River Axe, the Rivers Otter and Sid, and the areas of Exmouth, Scrase Bridge and West Common Streams.

  • Rivers Clyst and Culm and their tributaries
  • Tidal riverbank of the Thames from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir
  • Lower Avon and tributaries

A flood warning means that flooding is possible but not certain. It is the least serious flood warning issued by the Environment Agency, after the flood warnings and severe flood alerts.
