12-year-old arrested for threatening Washoe County schools on social media

Police have arrested a 12-year-old student for posting threats of violence on social media, targeting several schools in Washoe County.

The student posted photos of weapons and tagged multiple WCSD schools threatening shootings or other violence on Instagram. Two separate posts were uploaded.

On Saturday, September 7th, immediately after receiving information about the messages, WCSD police began an investigation and worked with the FBI. The student was arrested without incident and charged with two counts of making threats or communicating false information about terrorist acts, resulting in two felonies.

Hundreds of reports about the social media posts were made to public safety agencies in the region, which impacted the agencies and created fear in the community. The original social media posts were shared repeatedly and copycat posts have also emerged.

“Any threats to our students, staff and schools are taken seriously and will not be tolerated,” said WCSD PD Deputy Chief Seana Baker. “Making threats is illegal and we will enforce the law to the fullest extent possible.”

There are no ongoing threats to the schools mentioned in this social media post, or to the future dates mentioned.
