James Earl Jones’ ‘Field of Dreams’ co-star Kevin Costner shares moving tribute to late star

Hollywood is mourning the passing of legendary actor James Earl Jones.

Jones, known for his voice as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise and Mufasa in the 1994 and 2019 Lion King films, died Monday morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York, surrounded by family, his spokesperson confirmed to ABC News.

He was 93 years old.

His “Star Wars” colleague Mark Hamill wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “#RIP dad 💔.” In the films, Hamill played Luke Skywalker, the son of Darth Vader.

In addition to “Star Wars” and “The Lion King,” Jones, who received an honorary Oscar in 2012, has made his mark on film and television, playing many iconic roles in his career, including Terrence Mann in the 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” in which he starred opposite Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta and Gaby Hoffman. He also played King Jaffe Joffer in “Coming to America” and “Coming 2 America” opposite Eddie Murphy and more.

Kevin Costner: Costner, who starred opposite Jones in “Field of Dreams,” took to Instagram to share a touching message about his late co-star. Costner highlighted Jones’ talent and “kindness” in his post, and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. Costner wrote, “If you’ve seen it, you know this movie wouldn’t be the same with anyone else in his role. Only he could bring that kind of magic to a movie about baseball and an Iowa cornfield.”

“Rest in peace, friend,” Costner concluded.

Rob Minkoff: Minkoff, the director of the 1994 film “Lion King,” shared a 1993 photo with Jenkins on Instagram, writing how “blessed” he was to work with Jones.

“I just learned that the great James Earl Jones has passed away,” Minkoff said. “His portrayal of Mufasa was perfect. What a powerful man and actor. We are gone, but we will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.”

Barry Jenkins: “Forever and ever legendary,” Barry Jenkins wrote in the caption of an Instagram post featuring a black-and-white photo of Jones.

Octavia Spencer: “I am incredibly saddened to hear that #JamesEarlJones passed away today,” Spencer wrote in an Instagram post. “Legendary doesn’t even begin to describe his iconic roles and impact on cinema forever.”

“His voice and talent will be remembered forever,” she added. “Sending love to his family, friends and countless fans in galaxies far, far away. 🤍🕊️”

LeVar Burton: Burton, who starred in the 1980 film “Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones” with Jones, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “There will never be another actor with such a singular combination of charms.”

Colman Domingo: “Rest in peace. Thank you for everything. Everything. Everything,” the “Rustin” actor wrote on Instagram. “We were all watching you. Thank you King James Earl Jones. Rest in peace.”

Bob Iger: Disney CEO Bob Iger highlighted Jones’ career in a moving tribute on Disney’s Instagram page.

“From the gentle wisdom of Mufasa to the brooding menace of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones gave voice to some of the greatest characters in cinematic history,” Iger said. “A celebrated actor with nearly 200 film and television credits to his name, the stories he brought to life with a unique, commanding presence and true wealth of spirit have left an indelible mark on generations of audiences. On behalf of all of us at Disney, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Garcelle Beauvais: “Words cannot express how sad this makes me!” Jones’ “Coming to America” ​​co-star Garcelle Beauvais said in an Instagram post. “Thank you for gracing us with your talent and spirit! It was a pleasure working with you and knowing you #jamesearljones 🙏🏾🖤 restinpower.”

Paul Feig: “James Earl Jones will never die,” the director wrote on X. “His talent, work and influence will be with us forever. RIP, Mr. Jones.”

Yvette Nicole Brown: “Besides #StarWars, the first movie I remember ever seeing was #Claudine,” Brown said in an Instagram post. “#JamesEarlJones is part of my cinematic DNA. Heartbreaking isn’t enough.”

Lydia Cornell: “Oh no!! I can’t believe it!!” the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actress wrote on X. “I thought he would live forever. My costar from my first movie. Rest in peace James Earl Jones.”

Danielle Brooks: “Rest in peace to one of our giants,” Brooks wrote in an Instagram post. “May we forever hold your voice in our hearts!”

Wendell Pierce: “Genius Personified,” Pierce wrote on X. “Humanity Exemplified. Artistry of the supreme order. A personal hero of monumental talent. Once in a generation. My soul is broken by the news of his transition.”

Rosario Dawson: “May the force be with you,” Dawson wrote in the caption of an Instagram post. “Rest in power King James, THANK YOU”

Kerry Washington: “Your voice has left a lasting impression on film and theater,” Washington wrote in a post on X. “Your roles have shaped our imaginations. Your legacy will live on forever. Rest in peace, Mr. Jones 🤍”

Debbie Allen: “Today we lost our Big Daddy,” the actress, dancer and singer wrote on Instagram. “#JamesEarlJones will forever be remembered as THE GOAT. It was truly a privilege to direct him and a blessing to be loved by him. We will forever speak his name and tell the great stories that will become Legends and Myths and will sow generations to come.”
