On Wednesday, September 11, the 25-year-old singer dressed to impress as she performed a medley of her 2024 hits “Please Please Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso” during the star-studded ceremony at New York’s UBS Arena.

After impressing on the VMAs red carpet in a glittering vintage Bob Mackie gown that Madonna previously wore to the Oscars in 1991, Carpenter donned a completely custom Victoria’s Secret dress for her performance.

The whole was decorated with over 100,000 stones placed by hand and featured handmade crystal fringes covered with over 18,500 crystal beads.

During her space-inspired performance, Carpenter kicked off with “Please Please Please” from a swing held up by a giant Moon Person above the audience, before paying tribute to Britney Spears by incorporating the famous spoken interlude from her “Oops!… I Did It Again” music video. She then launched into her latest single, “Taste.”

Carpenter, who kissed an alien during the performance, closed by belting out her song “Espresso” while surrounded by dancing astronauts. All three songs are from Carpenter’s most recent album Short and sweet.

Not only did the singer perform at Wednesday’s star-studded ceremony, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, but she also won her first Moon Person after “Espresso” won the song of the year award.

Carpenter — who was nominated for six awards at the event — began her acceptance speech with, “I’ve literally never won one before. This is really special.”

“The first people I want to thank are the fans,” Carpenter said as the crowd cheered, before joking, “If y’all start clapping after everything I say, they’re going to call me off the stage, so hang on.”

“But I just want to say that you guys are the reason that I get to do what I love, but also the reason that we have so much fun and share music together,” she continued. “And I feel so grateful that I have the best, truly the best, fans in the world. I know it sounds cheesy, but I love you guys.”

After thanking her managers, her family and everyone involved with “Espresso,” she referred to the much-discussed lyric by saying, “And thank you to that’s that me espresso.”
