Chappell Roan Reveals Why She Told Photographer ‘Shut Up’

Chappell Roan has revealed why she yelled “shut the f–k up” at a photographer while posing for photos on the red carpet at the 2024 VMAs.

The 26-year-old, who took home a glittering award for Best New Artist, initially turned away from the flashing lights as she tried to jazz up her medieval outfit before posing for photos.

But as she was getting ready, she quickly turned around and started cursing at a cameraman.

The “Red Wine Supernova” hitmaker then pointed to herself before telling the paparazzi, “Not me, b–h.”

“As someone who gets a lot of anxiety from people yelling at you, the carpet is horrible and I yelled back,” she explained to Entertainment Tonight. “You can’t yell at me like that.”

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer admitted she was “nervous” about her first VMA performance during a red carpet interview.

“There’s a lot of technical stuff going on that I’ve never experienced before, but we’ve practiced so much. I feel like this is the next step in my career, so I was like, ‘Damn, okay, it feels good to be here,’” she said.

Although her heated onstage exchange raised eyebrows, singer Noah Kahan supported Roan.

“I will never forget leaving Clive Davis and the horrible shit photographers and paparazzi or whatever said to me for my sweet mother who couldn’t believe it was actually happening. I love this @ChappellRoan way of standing up for yourself,” Kahan wrote on X.

During the star-studded awards ceremony, Roan treated fans and celebrities to a fiery performance of her summer hit “Good Luck, Babe” before accepting the Best New Artist Award.

In her speech of thanks, the singer read an excerpt from her diary.

“I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me,” Roan said, giving a shout-out to “the gays who dedicate my song to someone they love, or hate.”

Before her big win, the singer said she had never won an award before.

“I’ve never won anything before, so that would be awesome. It’ll be cool,” Roan said on the red carpet.

The musician received four nominations, including Best New Artist, Push Performance of the Year for “Red Wine Supernova,” Best Trending Video for “Hot To Go!” and Song Of Summer for “Good Luck, Babe!”
