Bears QB Caleb Williams ‘a little bruised’ after seven-sack night against Texans

Williams struggled most in the second half, as the pressure mounted and his decision-making sped up. His two interceptions Sunday night came in the final two quarters as he tried to make things happen. After going 12-of-15 for 91 yards and a 91.9 passer rating in the first half, the QB completed 11-of-22 attempts for 83 yards, two INTs and a 21.6 passer rating in the second half.

Williams especially struggled against the blitz. The No. 1 overall pick earned a 4.9 passer rating against the blitz in Week 2, according to Next Gen Stats — his worst in a game in the NGS era (2016, min. 20 dropbacks against blitz). Against the blitz, Williams went 3-of-12 with five sacks and an interception.

Eberflus said it’s a learning process for the rookie.

“There were some spots where I think he really did a good job of driving up in the pocket and making some good throws, so there’s definitely some positives to look at,” Eberflus said. “Plus, he was able to evade the rush a couple of times and get to the perimeter a couple of times. He’s got to be careful with the football after he gets there when he’s throwing the ball in a scramble drill. So great learning opportunities for him as far as the pressure you’re talking about, what you’ve got to do and when you’ve got to do it.”

According to Next Gen Stats, the Bears’ starting O-line allowed 28 QB pressures, with the tackles having a particularly tough time against Hunter and Anderson: Braxton Jones, eight pressures allowed; Darnell Wright, six pressures; Teven Jenkins, six; Nate Davis, four; Coleman Shelton, four.

The seven sacks the Bears allowed were the most since Week 17 of 2022 in Detroit (also seven).
