Mark Schlereth to Steelers fans: ‘Don’t break your arms patting yourself on the back’ Beats rebuilding team with rookie QB

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 2-0, and that’s true regardless of which teams put them at 0-1. This week it just so happened to be the Denver Broncos, a team that is rebuilding with a rookie quarterback. They looked like they were yesterday on home soil, but the Steelers may have something has to do with it after all.

Not in the eyes of former Broncos OL Mark Schlereth, who has repeatedly voiced his opinion this offseason. That’s partly because he’s been promoting himself more, but also because former Broncos QB Russell Wilson is now with the Steelers. Wilson didn’t even play yesterday due to injury, but Schlereth is still downplaying the significance of the win.

“Steelers fans, you beat a rookie QB and a rebuilding team by 7,” Schlereth wrote on X about their win over the Broncos. “Don’t break your arms patting yourself on the back!”

Admittedly, we hope this is far from the Steelers’ most impressive win this season over a questionable Broncos team. While rookie QB Bo Nix threw for 246 yards, it was too little, too late, and gadget-heavy. As a team, they rushed for just 64 yards, averaging 3.4 yards per attempt. Nix also threw two interceptions, one in the red zone, highlighting his rookie shortcomings.

In the season opener, the Steelers defeated the Atlanta Falcons, who play the Philadelphia Eagles tonight. They held Atlanta to just 10 points, relying on the takeaway, now with five total points through two games. Pittsburgh, however, has only scored 31 points so far, which needs immediate improvement.

I think we all know that Schlereth is ultimately right, at least in the most basic sense. It’s not impressive, or so it seems, that the Steelers are beating the Falcons and Broncos. They don’t seem to be good teams right now, so beating them doesn’t tell us much about how good the Steelers are.

But the Steelers can only play the teams on their schedule in the order they appear. They’ve taken care of business and have a 2-0 record to show for it; that’s all we can say. Who’s to say they can’t or won’t beat the Chargers next week, or the Cowboys later?

Remember that devastating late-season AFC North gauntlet that the Steelers were supposed to fear? With the rest of the division currently 1-5, it doesn’t seem like the greatest threat of all time. Granted, the Bengals are slow starters and the Ravens will look better once their line settles in.

While Schlereth is “right” on that point, his comment clearly stinks of sour grapes. No surprise from the man who calls himself Stink. His opinions often stink, especially when it comes to the Steelers. And after watching his Broncos lose to the Steelers, it smells like he’s ready for a replacement.
