Sean Combs, better known as Diddy, was arrested Monday, a source with knowledge of the investigation said.

He was arrested in the lobby of a New York City hotel, a spokesman said.

Diddy’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, released a statement saying, “We are disappointed with the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s decision to prosecute Mr. Combs, which we believe was an unfair trial.”

Diddy, he said, “is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. To his credit, Mr. Combs has been nothing but cooperative with this investigation and voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve judgment until you know all the facts.

“These are the actions of an innocent man who has nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court,” Agnifilo said.

It’s not yet clear what charges the rapper and music mogul has been arrested on, but the indictment follows a wave of lawsuits filed against him alleging sexual assault and an ongoing federal investigation.

The federal investigation was made public in March when federal agents executed search warrants at his properties in Los Angeles and Miami.

Detectives have questioned several people in connection with allegations of sex trafficking, sexual abuse and the sale and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms, a source familiar with the investigation told NBC News in March.

The warrant to search Combs’ property came from the Southern District of New York, NBC News previously reported.
