America’s Got Talent Contestant Emily Gold, 17, Dies by Suicide

Dancer and America has talent Contestant Emily Gold, 17, has died.

On Friday, September 13, Gold was found dead by suicide at 11:52 p.m., the San Bernardino coroner’s office confirms to PEOPLE.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said that “officers with the California Highway Patrol Rancho Cucamonga area responded to a pedestrian lying in the travel lane.”

“When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old female who had been struck by at least one other vehicle in the carpool lane on eastbound 210,” Jimenez said. “The female succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Police are asking anyone who may have seen what happened or has additional information to contact their investigator, Officer S. Gonzalez.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department and representatives from America has talent and Los Osos High School for comment.

Just a month ago, the Southern California teen had stunned the nation with the Los Osos High School dance team at America has talentAfter passing the auditions, the group made it to the quarter-finals of the series, but were eliminated in August.

Despite their elimination, judge Simon Cowell gave the team’s energetic performance a standing ovation.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” Cowell said at the time. “What I loved about it was the energy first of all. I think I just saw everything a great school should do, which is encourage talent and encourage friendship.”

Cowell continued: “It reminded me of seeing the High school musical film and I think every child should go to a school like that.”

Speaking to PEOPLE on August 13, Gold said of her time on stage, “When I’m performing, I really think about all the corrections because we get corrections up until five minutes before we go on stage. So really thinking about all those corrections so that we implement them is my biggest priority on stage.”

Asked how she combines her time in high school with her performances at AGT-er, She said: “It’s definitely difficult to balance everything, but we’re doing it.”

Shortly after news of her passing, Gold’s survivors set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the dancer’s family.

“It is with great sadness that we share that our Los Osos Grizzly Emily Gold has passed away,” the fundraiser reads. “Let us come together as a community and support the Gold family during this difficult time. Please know that these funds will go directly to the family to help support them and help with expenses.”
