Man United 7-0 Barnsley (17 Sep 2024) Match Analysis

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen all scored twice as Manchester United reached the last 16 of the League Cup with a 7-0 win over third-tier Barnsley on Tuesday.

In the fourth round, United were joined by fellow Premier League clubs Brentford, who beat third-tier Leyton Orient 3-1, and Crystal Palace, who defeated Queen’s Park Rangers 2-1.

Premier League side Fulham were knocked out in extraordinary fashion by Second Division side Preston North End after the match had ended 1-1. Preston won 16-15 on penalties, the longest shootout ever in the competition.

England forward Rashford ended a six-month goal drought last weekend when he scored against Southampton in the Premier League. He needed just 16 minutes to score against Barnsley.

His silky strike ensured United beat Barnsley, who were no match for Erik Ten Hag’s side.

Antony scored the second goal from the penalty spot in the 35th minute and Garnacho fired in United’s third in first-half injury time to put the home side in complete control.

Garnacho edged home Rashford’s second goal just after half-time and fed the ball back to Rashford to make it 5-0. Eriksen scored his first United goal in over a year in the 81st minute, firing home a cross from Bruno Fernandes.

Eriksen then fired home from the edge of the penalty area to complete United’s biggest ever League Cup victory.

The Premier League’s bottom two clubs met at Goodison Park and Everton were made even more difficult as they were knocked out on penalties by Southampton, following a 1-1 draw.

Abdoulaye Doucouré put Everton ahead, but Southampton equalised through Taylor Harwood-Bellis and the visitors won 6-5 in the shootout. Eleven penalties ended up in the net before Ashley Young saw his effort saved by Alex McCarthy.

Brentford were given an early scare when Brandon Cooper put Orient ahead, but Fabio Carvalho equalised with acrobatic style. Mikel Damsgaard headed Brentford ahead and Christian Norgaard put Thomas Frank’s side through.

Eddie Nketiah scored his first goal for Crystal Palace and Eberechi Eze scored the winning goal against his former club QPR to send Palace through to the last 16.

Sheffield Wednesday won 1-0 at Blackpool, while Championship club Stoke City needed penalties to move past fourth-tier Fleetwood Town after being held to a 1-1 draw.
