Creepy photo shows teenage girl luring stepfather home after killing mother

A Mississippi teenage girl lured her stepfather home to shoot him after killing her mother and impersonating her in text messages, prosecutors alleged in opening statements in a murder trial Monday.

The New York Post reported that Carly Gregg, 15, texted her stepfather, “When you home babe,” right after she got home from school with her mother, Ashley Smylie, and shot her to death with a .357 magnum. Smylie, 40, was a math teacher at Gregg’s school, Northwest Rankin High School.

Gregg was charged with murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence after being captured on surveillance cameras walking around her home moments after allegedly shooting her mother three times.

When her stepfather Heath Smylie came home, Gregg shot him in the shoulder before he could get the gun from her.

“We believe the testimony will show that she poked her head into the kitchen to make sure her mother didn’t come out of her bedroom,” Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Newman told a Rankin County jury. “We believe the evidence will then show that she walked behind her back with that .357 magnum, walked into her own bedroom and then shot her mother three times, killing her.”

Prosecutors said Gregg’s mother recently discovered her “secret life.” A friend of Gregg’s told her she had been doing drugs and getting high on marijuana. WLBT reported that Ashley found vape pens in Gregg’s room when they got home from school.

Video footage captured two dogs running around the kitchen in panic before Gregg came back into view, hiding the gun from the security camera and picking up a phone. Her mother was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound to the face.

Footage from the sheriff’s body camera, also shown during the trial, showed Gregg breaking down in tears when police found her mother dead.

Gregg also texted a friend asking if he could come over for an “emergency,” prosecutors alleged.

“Have you ever seen a dead body? My mother is over there,” Gregg allegedly told the friend.

Psychiatrist Andrew Clark, who testified in court, said the teenager was having a mental health crisis and was hearing voices.

“For Carly in particular, she was so concerned about her mother’s approval, so for her this was a crisis,” Clark said in court, adding that Gregg had lost all memory of the shooting.

Her stepfather Heath said he still had a “good” relationship with Gregg.

“I’ve never seen anyone like that, not even in movies. She wasn’t herself and I don’t think she recognized me,” her stepfather said in court, according to WLBT.

If Gregg is found guilty, she could spend the rest of her life in prison for the murder.
