Oklahoma welcomes back Josh Heupel for game against Tennessee

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma welcomed back Josh Heupel, but it was short-lived.

About 25 minutes before kickoff between Tennessee and Oklahoma, the Vols were warming up.

Then an image appeared on the big screen with the message: “Welcome back Josh Heupel.” The message was accompanied by a live video of Heupel on the field, which also noted his accomplishments as a former Sooner.

The announcer also announced Heupel’s return to Oklahoma. Oklahoma fans applauded Heupel, who is now the coach of Tennessee.

It was unclear whether Heupel heard or saw the message, especially since it lasted less than 10 seconds. Heupel also walked out of the frame of the live video recording.

Heupel led Oklahoma to the 2000 national title as the Heisman runner-up quarterback. And he served as an assistant coach for 11 seasons before Bob Stoops fired him as offensive coordinator after the 2014 season.

No. 7 Tennessee (3-0) plays No. 13 Oklahoma (3-0) in their SEC opener.

This story will be updated as more tributes are made to Heupel.
