ATP Tour final: Daniil Medvedev defeats Alex de Minaur in Turin

A rejuvenated Daniil Medvedev defeated Alex de Minaur 6-2 6-4 in his second match at the ATP Tour Finals.

Fourth seed Medvedev was furious during his opening defeat to American Taylor Fritz on Sunday but seemed much calmer during Tuesday’s victory.

The 28-year-old Russian, who was booed for his antics against Taylor, put his fingers in his ears after sealing the win.

He lost only nine points on his serve as he secured victory in an hour and 18 minutes.

Medvedev’s temperament came under scrutiny after his sullen behavior 48 hours earlier, but he struck the ball superbly and broke with a cross-court winner in the third game.

The 28-year-old got a double break when De Minaur made a double fault and took the first set in 40 minutes.

De Minaur battled in a pulsating second set but Medvedev’s stunning backhand put him ahead 5-4 and he held serve to take victory.

Top seed Jannik Sinner – who defeated De Minaur on Sunday – faces Fritz in front of the Italian’s home fans in Tuesday’s later Ilie Nastase Group match from 19:30 GMT.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Henry Patten and partner Harri Helioevaara are on the brink of the doubles semi-finals after a second straight win.

They defeated Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 in a repeat result of their Wimbledon final.

The British-Finnish duo are aiming to become the first team to win the Wimbledon and ATP Finals trophies in the same season since Mike Bryan and Jack Sock in 2018.
