3 Things That Will Help Bears Beat Colts

(3) Avoid negative attacks.

Last Sunday night in Houston, the Bears lost yardage on six penalties, seven sacks, three running plays and two completed passes.

When asked this week where he would most like to make strides, Waldron said, “We want to avoid negative plays. We want to be an efficient offense and we want to be able to run the ball. A good place to start is getting in and out of the huddle, me calling the play and getting to the line of scrimmage. No delays of games, no false starts before the snap, none of those mechanics.”

Much of the negative play in the first two games came from the Titans and Texans targeting Williams. The Bears expect the Colts and other future opponents to use this strategy against the rookie quarterback.

“We just have to be on top of it,” receiver DJ Moore said. “Know what we can call, know what we can protect, know when we’re hot, just to help Caleb. I know we have to nip that in the bud because it’s a copycat league and other teams are going to try to beat him.”

The Bears are working on improving their tactics to defend the defensive lines.

“A lot of times when it’s a five-man (rush), which we had last week, it’s more about plays, twists and pick games that happen in there,” coach Matt Eberflus said. “We’ve got to work on passing those. They did that last week.”

This week of practice, the Bears focused on correcting the mistakes they made against the Texans in the pass protection game.

“It’s not a scheme,” Eberflus said. “It’s not this or that. It all comes down to basic principles and fundamentals and we have to keep working on that.”
