Fantasy managers won’t like Patrick Mahomes’ opinion on Travis Kelce’s start

Travis Kelce has had little to no success over the past three weeks for the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.

Kelce has combined for eight receptions and 69 yards in three games and has yet to score a touchdown. The quintessential fantasy football superstar currently ranks 20th in scoring at tight end, as he has averaged just five points per game, according to Fantasy Pros.

Fantasy managers who drafted Kelce with their third- or fourth-round pick certainly aren’t happy. And Patrick Mahomes’ explanation of Kelce’s slow start probably won’t make them feel any better.

“It’s crazy, because teams still have — the respect they have for Travis is just unreal,” Mahomes told reporters after Kansas City’s win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, according to Sports Illustrated. “I mean, it’s well-deserved, but we call a lot of plays for Travis, and it’s like two or three people go to him. So he gets it.”

Kelce’s lack of production hasn’t fazed the Chiefs, however. Kansas City’s offense ranks fifth in points scored and Mahomes has thrown for the sixth-most touchdowns.

Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice leads all pass-catchers with 24 receptions for 288 yards, while Xavier Worthy is second on the team in receiving yards (81) on six catches. Rice specifically has scored more fantasy points than every receiver except New York Giants’ Malik Nabers.

“I think that’s the great thing about him (Kelce), he wants to make an impact on the game, but at the end of the day he wants to win,” Mahomes said. “And I’m going to do my best to keep getting him the ball when he’s there, when he’s open.

“I think the more Rashee plays, the more we can run the ball, the more we can get Worthy involved. I think that’s going to open up Travis more. I mean, people are really stressing about getting him out, and it’s going to open up other guys.”

While it’s great for Kansas City’s offense when the opposing defense takes Kelce out of the game, it’s certainly not good for the players who have him in their lineups every week.
