Winners and losers of Bills-Jags, Commanders-Bengals doubleheader – NBC4 Washington

One Monday Night Football game produced results, the other…not at all.

Week 3 concluded with a doubleheader, starting with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills defeating Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars 47-10 at home. Buffalo led 34-3 at halftime and never looked back as Jacksonville remained without a win this season.

In the second game, Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals tried to avoid an 0-3 start at home, but they were surprised by newcomer Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders, who won 38-33 in a thrilling game.

Let’s further analyze the two games with winners and losers:

WINNER: Josh Allen, Bills

It’s simple. When Allen performs well, the Bills usually do too. And Allen was terrific against Jacksonville, dominating 23 of 30 completions for 263 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 44 rushing yards on six attempts.

Buffalo scored routinely, especially in the first half when it converted on every possession en route to a 34-3 halftime lead. James Cook and Ray Davis produced no rushing yards but each added a touchdown on the ground to support Allen.

With all the talk about Allen’s receiving core, it wasn’t a problem tonight. Khalil Shakir, Cook, Dalton Kincaid, Ty Johnson and Curtis Samuel all caught at least three passes, with Keon Coleman chipping in for 24 yards.

Allen may have tougher games ahead of him, but the Bills will remain in the conversation as long as he’s on the field.

LOSER: All of Jacksonville

Pathetic, listless, uninspired, whatever you want to call it, it’s probably an accurate description of the evening Jacksonville endured as the team went down 0-3.

Offense, defense and special teams failed to make an impact, with Lawrence making headlines after signing a five-year, $275 million extension in the midseason. Lawrence struggled mightily, going 21 of 38 for 178 yards, one touchdown, one interception and being sacked four times. He didn’t eclipse 60 passing yards at intermission.

Travis Etienne Jr. had 68 rushing yards on 11 carries, but the entire conversation will be about Lawrence’s inability to win games, an eight-game streak that now dates back to last season.

There wasn’t much to report on defense either, as evidenced by Buffalo’s nearly 50-year-old.

Even Mac Jones came on for Lawrence in the fourth quarter and was immediately stripped, although he was lucky that Casey Toohill squandered the potential scoop-and-score chance.

WINNER: Damar Hamlin, Bills

After going into cardiac arrest during a Monday night game in January 2023 and collapsing on the field, Bills safety Hamlin experienced a highlight when he recorded his first career interception on the same platform.

In the second quarter, with Buffalo leading 20-3, Lawrence’s feint led to an overthrow that fell right into Hamlin’s hands.

Hamlin has been Buffalo’s starting safety since Week 1 and he’s slowly repaying that trust.

LOSER: Bengals Defense

While Burrow and Co. are making headlines for the loss, there wasn’t much they could do with a defense that made enough stops. The same goes for Washington, but their offense took advantage early and didn’t let Cincinnati take the lead.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor is now under more pressure to potentially make changes on that end of the court.

Burrow finished the game with 29 of 38 completions for 324 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Chase Brown (62) and Zach Moss (58) combined for 120 rushing yards, while Ja’Marr Chase had his best game of the season with six catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

It was all lost, but the schedule lightens up a bit. Cincinnati’s next four games are away at Carolina, home to Baltimore, away at the New York Giants and then at Cleveland. A potential 3-1 stretch would put the Bengals back in the conversation, but the Ravens game will play a big role in testing their mettle.

The Commanders took an early lead against the Bengals, but Cincinnati mounted a comeback attempt in the closing minutes that was ultimately stopped by Washington.

WINNER: Jayden Daniels, Commanders Announce Arrival

Daniels has arrived. Washington’s No. 2 overall pick broke out on the big stage, leading his team to a convincing victory, not on the scoreboard but in impact.

He threw for 254 yards on 21 of 23 completions, two touchdowns and no picks, while adding 39 rushing yards on 12 tries and a touchdown. The Heisman winner exuded confidence and composure in his first NFL primetime game, which was also away.

The Commanders have made intriguing moves throughout the offseason, but it wouldn’t have mattered if the QB play hadn’t been the same. At 2-1 through the first three games, things are looking good for Daniels and Co. under head coach Dan Quinn, but they’ll have to prove their legitimacy in this next period.

Washington’s next four games are at Arizona, home to Cleveland, at Baltimore and home again to Carolina. The Commanders entered the season with unknown expectations, but that will change depending on what their record looks like in a few weeks.
