Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre said he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a shocking revelation he made to Congress Tuesday during testimony about his alleged misuse of taxpayer dollars.

Favre, who is appearing before the House Finance Committee, is accused of improperly using his political connections to funnel government money into his alma mater and his own pocketbook.

“Unfortunately, I also lost an investment in a company that I believed was developing a breakthrough drug for concussions that I thought could help others. And I’m sure you can understand why it’s too late for me, because I was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease,” Favre told lawmakers.

“This is also a matter close to my heart. Recently, the doctor who runs the company admitted that he took (public) money for his own use.”Parkinson’s is a brain disorder that causes unintentional or uncontrollable movements.

Symptoms, such as tremors and problems with balance and coordination, gradually worsen over time and often lead to problems with walking and talking.

Favre was in Washington on Tuesday to answer questions about how he obtained money from the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

According to a state auditor, the Hall of Fame QB improperly received money from the program for speaking engagements he never made.

Favre is also accused of using his ties to former Gov. Phil Bryant to lobby for TANF funds for a new volleyball facility at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where his daughter played.

Favre has not been prosecuted, but he is paying back some of the money.
