Protesters call on NV Energy, Public Utilities Commission, to keep energy affordable

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Dozens of community members gathered in protest of rising energy costs ahead of Wednesday’s Public Utilities Commission of Nevada consumer session.

During the consumer sessions, several people said their bills have gone up. Some say they have seen an increase of hundreds of dollars in just a few years.

On Wednesday, the group spoke out against NV Energie’s high rates. They also called on the Public Utilities Commission to consider more renewable energy sources. The group said these sources would be cleaner and help keep high costs down.

“In Nevada, we have extremely high rates, meaning Nevadans in many cases are paying more than 10 percent of their annual income on utilities,” said Kristee Watson, executive director of the Nevada Conservation League. “That’s just too much of a burden, with Nevadans having to choose between things like groceries and medications to keep the lights on.”
