Mets’ Carlos Mendoza was ejected on a low strike three call on Francisco Alvarez

Friday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers is huge for the Mets, so if a home plate umpire has an inconsistent strike zone, they’re going to hear about it, and in this one it came to a head.

With the Mets down 5-2, Francisco Alvarez came in as the tying run with men on first and second base and two outs. Alvarez fought to make it 3-2 against Brewers starter Frankie Montas fouling multiple fields. However, on the 10th pitch of the at bat, Montas threw a pitch that appeared low and outside the strike zone. Alvarez left first, thinking he had run, when Ramon De Jesus called the young backstop.

Alvarez jumped and threw his batting helmet to the ground while yelling at the home plate umpire. Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza came out to make sure his catcher wasn’t ejected, but gave De Jesus a piece of his mind. That’s when De Jesus sent Mendoza packing.

It was just a poor performance from De Jesus. His inconsistency may have cost the starter Sean Manaea in the first inning, calling a pair of borderline pitches that resulted in two walks. The Brewers took advantage of this and scored four points.

In Alvarez’s at bat, the first pitch appeared low and a strike was called outside.

Friday marked the second time this season – and his career as a manager – that Mendoza has been sent off.

The first occurred on July 12, involving a fight involving balls and strikes in a game at Citi Field against the Rockies.
