Flights in Florida and many Gulf states have been canceled due to Hurricane Milton.

More than 2,270 flights have been canceled as of Thursday, according to tracking software FlightAware.

Airports in Orlando, Tampa and elsewhere have grounded flights all week. In Miami alone, 148 flights were canceled.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), some airports remained closed Thursday due to the storm. Storm surge warnings remain in effect in affected areas.

“If you are leaving Florida, do not go to the airport unless that airport is open and it is safe to drive there. Always contact your airline(s) to verify flight status,” the TSA wrote.

Winds reached 125 miles per hour Wednesday evening as Hurricane Milton made landfall in western Florida. Milton also produced at least three tornadoes in South Florida.

Tampa International Airport was hardest hit, with 380 flights canceled on Thursday.

According to the Department of Transportation, if your flight is canceled, you are entitled to a full refund using the same payment method. This even applies to “non-refundable” tickets.

Although airlines often automatically rebook travelers after flight cancellations, given the widespread disruptions from Hurricane Milton, it is advisable to call your airline’s international helpdesk instead.

Additionally, tagging an airline on a social media platform like X can sometimes catch the attention of representatives who can quickly rebook passengers.

The 2024 hurricane season has about eight weeks left and officially ends on November 30.

“Tampa International Airport is working with its partners, including the FAA, TSA and airlines, to attempt to reopen to the public at 8 a.m. Friday following a three-day flight suspension due to Hurricane Milton,” the airport announced. “However, the Category 3 storm’s extreme winds and heavy rainfall have impacted several areas of the airport campus that require repairs.”
