Shohei Ohtani steals the 57th base, mostly from a Japanese-born player

DENVER – Los Angeles Dodgers dedicated hitter Shohei Ohtani hit his 54th homer of the season against Colorado on Friday night, after previously stealing base No. 57 and passing Ichiro Suzuki for the most in a season by a Japanese-born player.

Ohtani went 4-for-5, including a pair of singles and a double, and drove in four runs in the Dodgers’ 11-4 victory. He now has 24 hits over his past 34 at-bats.

“Shohei, he put on a show,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

Ohtani is making a serious run at a Triple Crown, leading the National League in home runs (54) and RBIs (130). Ohtani trailed only Luis Arráez (.314) in the batting title race and raised his average to .309.

He launched a towering three-run explosion into the second deck at Coors Field in the sixth inning on a switch from Rockies reliever Anthony Molina. Without a doubt, it was at the crack of the bat, with the sold-out crowd immediately erupting, an early show before the post-match fireworks display.

“(Ohtani) hits the ball really hard because he swings hard and he’s a strong guy,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “He really is an incredible talent.”

His total bases of 408 this season are the second-most in franchise history. Babe Herman set the record of 416 in 1930.

The Dodgers are now 38-12 on the season when Ohtani heads to the Garden.

“He’s locked in,” teammate Chris Taylor said. “He’s definitely in a zone right now. He’s feeling it. We’re all watching him continue to have a good year and finish it strong.”

In the second inning, Ohtani, dressed in spikes with a photo of his dog Decoy, stole second place and eclipsed Suzuki’s record from 2001 with Seattle. Suzuki played for the Mariners, New York Yankees and Miami before briefly returning to Seattle during a career that spanned parts of 19 seasons.

Ohtani has successfully stolen 34 bases in a row without being caught. It’s the second-longest streak in franchise history, behind only Davey Lopes’ 38 in 1975.

Ohtani is 57 of 61 in stolen base attempts this season.
