In pictures: solar eclipse creates ‘ring of fire’

An annular solar eclipse was observed in parts of South America on Wednesday, creating a blazing “ring of fire” in the sky.

Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun and the moon is near or at its farthest point in its orbit from Earth. The moon does not completely block the sun as it does during a total solar eclipse, which causes the ring of fire effect.

Although the eclipse’s path stretched across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and Antarctica, only parts of Argentina and Chile, including Easter Island, could see the ring of fire.
