PHILADELPHIA — This should be a lot of fun.

The New York Mets, fresh off their astonishing Game 3 victory in the National League Wild Card Series, are ready to take on a familiar opponent in the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Division Series, which begins Saturday at 4:08 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park.

The first surprising news came just over 24 hours before first pitch when Carlos Mendoza announced that Kodai Senga would be the team’s Game 1 starter against the Phillies. Zack Wheeler will take the ball for the Phillies in their first game of the playoffs after receiving a bye in the first round as the No. 2 seed in the National League.

With an exciting matchup ahead, here are the updates, news and analysis for the NLDS opener between the Mets and Phillies:

Zack Wheeler is still trading by five

The Mets’ first big offensive opportunity against Zack Wheeler came in the top of the fourth inning when Mark Vientos singled and Brandon Nimmo walked to lead off the inning.

But Pete Alonso was frozen on a called strikeout and Jose Iglesias grounded into a double play as the Phillies held on to their 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Starling Marte was hit by a 95 mph sinker but stayed in the game. Tyrone Taylor and Francisco Alvarez struck out to end the inning.

Kodai Senga done after two innings, Zack Wheeler hitless through three

After surrendering a leadoff home run to Kyle Schwarber, Kodai Senga returned to form.

The Mets ace retired six of the next seven Phillies batters, walking only Bryce Harper in the first inning. Senga struck out three, including two via his forkball, and completed two innings with one earned run allowed. He threw 31 pitches.

David Peterson takes the ball for the Mets to start the bottom of the third inning.

Meanwhile, the only baserunner for the Mets against Zack Wheeler through three innings was a two-out walk by Jesse Winker in the second inning.

Kodai Senga tapped for a homerun in the first at bat of the return

Schwarber set the Major League record for most leadoff home runs in a season in 2024. The Phillies designated hitter wasted no time in taking that success into the playoffs.

In his first at-bat returning from a calf injury, Kodai Senga served up a 400-foot solo home run to Schwarber as the Phillies took a 1–0 lead.

On the other hand, Wheeler was called in early and worked a 1-2-3 first inning with two strikeouts and all eleven of his pitches going for strikes.
