Hurricane Leslie, Nadine? No, there is not a hurricane coming to Florida

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring Tropical Storm Leslie and a new disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean, both of which are the result of Hurricane Milton.

Florida is on high alert for any activity in the Atlantic basin, fearing the next tropical storm or hurricane that could come its way.

And that’s for good reason.

Hurricane Helene made landfall just two weeks ago near Perry, Florida, just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River. It was a Category 4 hurricane with winds of up to 140 miles per hour. In parts of Taylor and Dixie counties, storm surge reached an estimated 15 feet.

On Wednesday evening, Hurricane Milton, a dangerous Category 3 storm, hit the west-central coast of Florida. It devastated many areas that were still picking up Helene’s pieces, dumping between five and eight inches of rain within hours.

According to the Associated Press, the death toll from Hurricane Helene has risen to at least 227 in six states. Hurricane Milton has killed 15 people so far.

Fortunately, Florida can breathe easy for now and focus on cleanup and recovery efforts, as neither Tropical Storm Leslie nor the latest tropical disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean pose a current threat to the state.

Is Tropical Storm Leslie coming to Florida?

No.

Tropical Storm Leslie is located about 1,636 miles (2,636 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores, an archipelago consisting of nine volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Knowing where that region is located should provide relief to Floridians, as it is more than 3,000 miles away. Split the difference and the tropical storm is about 1,400 miles away, in the opposite direction.

Tropical Storm Leslie will track north-northeast on Saturday before turning a sharper angle eastward through Sunday.

According to the NHC, Leslie should lose its organized deep convection on Sunday, if not earlier. It is still possible that the storm will take on extratropical characteristics over the next 48 to 72 hours.

Will the latest tropical disturbance become Tropical Storm Nadine?

The latest tropical disturbance to occur in the Atlantic Ocean certainly has the potential to become the next named storm: Tropical Storm Nadine.

According to the NHC, there is approximately a 50% chance of disruption in the next 48 hours. If Tropical Storm Nadine does, however, it will be short-lived.

Recent satellite data shows the system remains disorganized and conditions are expected to become less favorable on Saturday, meaning Nadine still has a small window to form before further development becomes unlikely, the NHC said.

In fewer words: if the disturbance becomes Tropical Storm Nadine, Florida doesn’t have to worry about it.

However, parts of the Cape Verde Islands may experience tropical storm force winds and areas of heavy rain through Friday night.
