Live updates: SpaceX is about to launch Starship test flight 5

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket lands upright in the Atlantic Ocean for the first time

SpaceX has always paid a lot of attention to reusing rocket parts.

Landing boosters after flight is a feat SpaceX has mastered with its smaller workhorse rocket, the Falcon 9.

In fact, Falcon 9 boosters have made soft touchdowns on sea platforms or ground platforms after more than 330 launches, allowing these vehicles to be refurbished and flown again. SpaceX says this has lowered its costs, allowing the company to underprice the rest of the rocket market.

The Falcon 9 boosters land by restarting their engines after detaching from the second stage, or upper portion, of the rocket (which goes further into space and carries satellites or astronauts). The booster then sends itself back to a platform at sea or on land.

Just before landing, the Falcon 9 restarts its engines, essentially using that power as a braking system.

Starship, meanwhile, is a much more powerful and complex system than the Falcon 9.

With 33 engines at its base, each more powerful than any of the nine used on the Falcon, the Super Heavy booster has about ten times the thrust at takeoff.

Instead of setting up Super Heavy, he’s led back to a huge tower with two “chopstick” arms that will try to catch the booster as it comes in to land.
