Columbus Day has been celebrated for years to commemorate the discovery of America by ancient explorer Christopher Columbus. In more recent years, historians and Americans have pushed for the holiday to be called Indigenous People’s Day because Columbus did not “discover” America.

Columbus found Native Americans living in this new place and enslaved them, which was part of the push for change. As of 2021, Philadelphia adopted the name change, and in 2023, Pittsburgh did the same.
