What is closed on Columbus Day 2024? Complete list – NBC Chicago

Monday, October 14 is the federal holiday of Columbus Day, which means many businesses, including the United States Postal Service, are closed.

However, many states recognize the day as Indigenous Peoples Day, but Illinois is not among them.

However, the state recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day on a different day: the last Monday in September, after legislation was passed designating the day in 2017. In 2020, an Illinois lawmaker renewed her effort to change the holiday from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Day, but those efforts have since stalled.

In the city of Chicago, Columbus Day is a recognized holiday. At 11:45 a.m., the 2024 Columbus Day Parade, organized by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, will step off at the corner of State Street and Wacker Drive.

Here’s an overview of what’s closed on Mondays:

Waste collection

According to the City of Chicago, there will be no trash collection on Columbus Day. Even if your waste is not collected on Monday, the holiday may affect your regular waste and recycling collection on weekdays.

Banks

A number of bank credit unions will likely be closed because Columbus Day is considered a holiday by the Federal Reserve. If they wish, banks can be open on a Federal Reserve holiday.

Although most major banks are closed, you can still take advantage of mobile and online services. The stock market, on the other hand, will be open that day. However, bond markets will remain closed.

US Postal Service

The US Postal Service will be closed Monday due to the holiday. Mail will also not be delivered, as Columbus Day is one of eleven holidays observed by the USPS.

Government buildings

State government facilities in Illinois will remain closed that day, as will federal government buildings across the country.

Libraries are expected to remain open.

DMV

Chauffeur services from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office will be closed for the holiday, according to the office’s website.

Schools

According to the Illinois State Board of Education, Columbus Day is among the “statutory school holidays” that do not count toward the mandatory 176-day school year.

Chicago public schools are closed Monday as the day is recognized as Indigenous People’s Day.

As for some of the area’s largest suburban districts, Indian Prairie School District #204, which primarily serves students from Aurora, Naperville, Bolingbrook and Plainfield, will be closed in honor of Columbus Day.

Elgin Area School District U46 will also be closed Monday in honor of both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day.

Community High School District 218, which serves students in several immediate southwest suburbs including Palos Heights, Oak Lawn and Blue Island, is also closed for the holiday.

More information about each school’s calendar can be found on the district’s website.

Stores: Target, Costco, Starbucks and more

Most retailers, supermarkets and restaurants will be open at regular times. But just to be safe, it’s not a bad idea to call ahead or check hours online before heading out.

Although Costco is closed on seven holidays throughout the year, it will be open on Columbus Day, according to its website.
