The Story Behind ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Episode ‘Silent All These Years’

On March 28, 2019, Grey’s anatomy the episode “Silent All These Years” aired, in which Jo (Camilla Luddington) treated a woman who had been sexually assaulted and culminated in a powerful scene of all the women in the hospital lining the hallway to make sure the patient was comfortable to get the treatment she needed.

The episode, which also revealed that Jo’s father had raped her mother, was praised for its ability to tackle such a delicate subject, with much of that praise going to writer Elisabeth R. Finch. Finch and then-showrunner Krista Vernoff even appeared on EW’s Awardist podcast to talk about the hour and the inspiration for the “Army of Awesome” as the women were in the audience.

But a new docuseries, Anatomy of liesprovided some more insight into the episode. Anatomy of lies describes Finch’s career with a focus on her time at Grey’s anatomyrevealing a number of lies she told, including the fact that her colleagues believed she had cancer for years, which turned out to be untrue.

In the series, former Gray writer Kiley Donovan specifically remembers telling Finch about a personal story. “At one point we were having drinks and I shared something that had happened to me, something that I was processing, which was that my biological father was my mother’s rapist,” Donovan says in the series. “And I hadn’t processed that trauma.”

Donovan continues, “That was around the time Finch started writing an episode she called ‘Silent All These Years,’ in which the character Jo Wilson would treat a woman who had been assaulted and administer a rape kit to her. But then the second part of the episode was in the past. Jo had flashbacks to meeting her mother and learning that she was conceived during a rape.

There’s no way to know for sure whether Finch took inspiration from her friend’s story or somewhere else, but Donovan admits it felt “weird and wrong” that Finch was praised for writing what Donovan called “THE most talked-about episode after Me Too’.

Finch is even part of the episode. Every female member of the crew was invited to don scrubs and be part of the crucial hallway scene, including Donovan, but it’s Finch who’s front and center pushing the stretcher.

Anatomy of liesnow out on Peacock, follows Finch’s life long after that particular episode, as she allegedly steals stories from others and is ultimately exposed for, among other things, lying about her cancer diagnosis.
