The New York Jets (2-4) have had a knack for shocking the football world in recent weeks.

Following the firing of head coach Robert Saleh and hours after a 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills (4-2) on “Monday Night Football,” the Jets have traded for All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams in a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

With such a blockbuster deal, there’s a lot to break down.

Here are eight thoughts on the Jets’ deal for Adams.

Aaron certainly has some appeal…

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is known to have some appeal…this pretty much confirms it. It was clear that Rodgers wanted his old Green Bay Packers buddy in Adams. The Jets got him.

Is there an odd one out?

While the addition of Adams is exciting for just about everyone, that’s not the case. Someone will now see less playing time in the Jets offense. Garrett Wilson won’t be the No. 1 receiver anymore, but he will play. Allen Lazard has a knack for getting into the end zone, so he has a spot.

It looks like it’s going to be Mike Williams, according to a report from Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, but we’ll find out:

Does Adams still have it?

Adams is definitely a talent. That’s why the Jets got him (along with Rodgers’ wishes). He’s a multiple-time All-Pro for a reason. However, he will turn 32 in December.

Adams had 103 catches for 1,144 yards with eight touchdowns on an underachieving Las Vegas Raiders team last year. Age is still undefeated. Ask Rodgers. It’s just something to keep in mind.

It’s not too late… right?

After a 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on “Monday Night Football”, the Jets have a record of 2-4. Is there still time for Gang Green to turn things around with Adams? One game at a time…

Contract

Full details are unknown, but the Jets and Adams have restructured his contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. His cap hit for this year will be lowered, but when he went into the trade, his contract was guaranteed through 2024, but not beyond. Adams is currently projected to have a cap hit of $36.25 million each year and has no guaranteed money in either season.

We’ll have to see where Adams’ long-term future with the Jets goes.

Compensation isn’t bad

What the Jets gave up for Adams is a good look for New York general manager Joe Douglas.

Adams gave the Raiders a conditional third-round pick. It could go to a runoff, but that threshold is so high that no one in New York will be upset if that happens. It won’t become a Round 2 pick until Adams is named All-Pro in 2024 or if he’s on the active roster when the Jets play in the AFC Championship game or Super Bowl, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

What does it mean for Reddick?

By adding Adams, the Jets will have to pay him. That likely means Haason Reddick’s career with the Jets will be over before it begins. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Reddick has been cleared to seek a trade, which isn’t a shock.

Woody is all in

Not only did the Jets land Adams, don’t forget that Robert Saleh was fired as head coach. It’s hard to argue: owner Woody Johnson is all in for 2024. He has to approve such a move and Johnson did.
