As the weather cools and it finally feels like fall, Oklahoma is expected to see its first freezing temperatures of the season this week.

Northern Oklahoma will see temperatures near or below freezing on Wednesday morning. Central Oklahoma, including OKC, will see temperatures in the mid 30s, while southern Oklahoma will be chilly in the low 40s.

What you need to know about the first frost in Oklahoma

The National Weather Service in Norman warns that northern Oklahoma will see subzero temperatures as low as 90 degrees between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The frigid weather can kill plants and damage unprotected outdoor pipes.

At what temperatures can my plants freeze?

The response to freezing weather depends entirely on the type of plant and how cold it gets.

  • Light freeze: 29° to 32°F – sensitive plants are killed.
  • Moderate freezing: 25° to 28°F — very destructive to most vegetation.
  • Severe frostbite: 80°F and colder – severe damage to most garden plants.
