The Rays question for 2025 looms after the destruction of Hurricane Milton

The impact of Hurricane Milton’s devastation on the Tampa community continues for the Rays.

Given the extensive damage to the team’s Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, where the roof was torn apart by the monstrous Category 3 storm, The Tampa Bay Times reported Tuesday that the venue likely won’t be ready for the start of the MLB 2025. season on March 27 and outlined possible options the AL East club could explore.

“In the coming days and weeks, we expect to be able to assess the true condition of Tropicana Field,” the organization said in a statement on Oct. 10.

“In the meantime, we are working with the police to secure the building. We ask for your patience at this time, and we encourage those who can to donate to organizations in our community that are helping those directly affected by these storms.”

In addition to the roof, which was installed in 1990, the Tampa Bay Times reported that there is “indication of extensive damage elsewhere,” specifically “some team offices on the fourth floor, which had suspended ceilings under the entire roof, are now open for the elements.”

Access to buildings is also limited “due to security concerns.”

One of the most pressing issues the Rays need to address is whether the team is looking at a short- or long-term alternative.

Weather, location and scheduling conflicts would be among the variables to be weighed.

While spring training facilities like Steinbrenner Field in Tampa and BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater have local appeal, they are roofless, opening the door to potential weather delays. Upgrades would also be needed to host regular-season games, according to the report.

Charlotte Sports Park, the Rays resource facility in Port Charlotte, Florida, and Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista were also highlighted as possibilities but carry similar drawbacks.

The report also illustrated the possibility of the Rays competing outside of North Carolina’s Sunshine State, where their Triple-A team is based, as there are many scheduling conflicts with nearby LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins.

The Rays have called Tropicana Field home since 1998.

They will move to a new location before the 2028 season.
