Menendez Brothers’ family launches justice for Erik and Lyle’s coalition at press conference in LA

The family of Lyle and Erik Menendez and attorney Mark Geragos held a press conference Wednesday to introduce a new coalition and website JusticeForLyleandErik.org.

Their aunt, Joan Vandermolen, urged the public to go to the site and sign the petition asking Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón to resent the brothers.

On October 3, Gascón announced that, in the wake of increased attention to the case following the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, he would review the brothers’ 1996 murder conviction.

Geragos mentioned two key pieces of evidence that were not presented at the 1996 trial: a letter written by Erik prior to the murders that referred to the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, Jose, and a statement from Roy Rosselló, former member of the trial. of the boy band Menudo, that he was also attacked by Jose Menendez.

The two brothers, now 56 and 53 years old respectively, were jailed after being found guilty of the 1989 double murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. Both are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.

On Sunday, Gascón posted a screenshot on Instagram of a handwritten letter from Erik from December 1988, referencing the abuse he and Lyle say they suffered at the hands of their father.

‘I tried to avoid Dad. It still happens Andy, but it’s worse for me now,” the letter to Erik and Lyle’s cousin Andy Cano said. “I never know when it’s going to happen and it drives me crazy. Every night I stay awake thinking he might come in. As of Tuesday, Gascon’s post had been removed, CNN reported.

Gascón said on Oct. 3 that his office is investigating “the possibility raised by his lawyers, and not by us, that there was evidence that, had it been presented to the jury, the outcome of the trial would have been different.”

The district attorney’s office, the Media Relations Division, said in a statement Wednesday that no decision had been made.

“Today’s scheduled press conference is being organized by the attorneys and family of the Menendez brothers. The Public Prosecution Service will not attend the press conference and will not make any statements about it. No decision has yet been made on the Menendez case. Once DA Gascón makes a decision, the victims’ relatives and the public will be notified,” the statement shared with TheWrap said.

The family hopes the brothers will be released by Thanksgiving to celebrate their aunt’s 93rd birthday, ABC News reported Wednesday.

Celebrities such as Rosie O’Donnell and Kim Kardashian have called for the brothers’ release.
