Tyler, The Creator Announces New Album, ‘Chromakopia’

The Grammy-winning musician’s seventh album will be released next week

Tyler, the Creator just announced the title and release date of his new album, Chromacopywill be released on October 28and now available for pre-order. The announcement comes days after Tyler infamously complained about fans harassing him for new music online. Last week, he responded to a post from Steve Lacy on Instagram, expressing his frustration with fans asking for new music. “I think you’re annoying, especially since I’ve never said out of my mouth that an album is coming,” Tyler wrote. “I want to be an actress lmao.”

It turns out that Tyler had plans up his sleeve all along.

Yesterday, he kicked off the rollout of this latest album that fans have been clamoring for by sharing a snippet of a new song and a new music video on YouTube. In the clip we hear Tyler in a new vocal register. His signature production style – the shimmering synth chord progressions that bathed early OF releases in a cartoonish technicolor – arrived subdued under a moodier sonic register. A sign of a clear musical reinvention, which is par for the course for Tyler, whose career to date has followed the rise and fall of his various alter egos as he entered different stages of life. Now it looks like Tyler is breaking new ground. More than a decade into his career, he’s an elder statesman of today’s youth culture, and this latest sonic turn might speak to some of the frustrations he’s expressed about the current state of music.

In addition to a new album, Tyler’s Camp Flog Gnaw Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary next month, giving Tyler, the Creator fans plenty to be happy about in the coming weeks.
