    Yankees vs. Guardians scoring, live updates: Cleveland aims to tie the series in ALCS Game 4

    Cleveland fans won’t soon forget the Guardians’ epic walk-off Game 3 victory over the Yankees on Thursday night, which was punctuated by monstrous home runs from Jhonkensy Noel and David Fry. But they don’t have much time to savor the win, with Game 4 on Friday and the Guardians still facing a 2-1 series deficit.

    Both starting pitchers made their first postseason appearances: Luis Gil for the Yankees (3.50 ERA in 151 2/3 innings this season) and Gavin Williams for the Guardians (4.86 ERA in 76 innings).

    Do the Guardians have some more magic left in them after Thursday’s heroics? They’ve been solid at home this season and have the momentum coming from their win in Game 3. We’ll find out soon enough.

      Luis Gil finally struck out Daniel Schneemann after a nine-pitch at-bat to end the third inning. Guardians leave two runners on base and trail 3-2 goes to the top of the fourth.

    • Luis Gil doesn’t get a strikeout call on Lane Thomas

      Lane Thomas walks with two outs on a close-check swing call. (On the replay it looked like Thomas was going around, but the on-field call said otherwise.)

      Matt Blake comes out to meet with Luis Gil before facing Daniel Schneemann.

    • Josh Naylor with an RBI single

      Steven Kwan reached base for the second time in two at bats and singled to open the bottom of the third. He advanced to second base on a steal.

      Luis Gil got Kyle Manzardo flying to right field and Jose Ramirez to second base. But Josh Naylor singled into left field to drive in Kwan and cut the Yankees’ lead to 3-2.

    • Erik Sabrowski takes out Soto and Judge

      Erik Sabrowski makes Stephen Vogt look good, causing Juan Soto to ground out to first base and strike out Aaron Judge to end the top of the third inning.

    • Pitching change for the Guardians

      Gavin Williams is out after 2 1/3 innings. He got Gleyber Torres to ground out to third base, after which manager Steven Vogt gave his starter the hook.

      Erik Sabrowski takes over for Cleveland with one out in the third.

      Williams gave up three runs on three hits, two of which were home runs. He struck out four Yankees batters.

    • Luis Gil throws a scoreless bottom of the 2nd

      Brayan Rocchio hit a fly ball to the left field wall, but Alex Verdugo caught the ball for the third out of the third inning.

      Luis Gil walked Austin Hedges, but retired the next three batters he faced. Daniel Schneemann grounded to second base, followed by Andres Gimenez flying to center.

    • Austin Wells goes deep

      The Yankees take a 3-1 lead on Austin Wells’ solo home run.

      Gavin Williams appeared to settle down after striking out Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpe. But then he dug a fastball through the middle of the strike zone, and Wells didn’t miss it.

      That’s Wells’ first home run dating back to September 9.

    • Luis Gil keeps Guardians at one point

      Luis Gil finishes the bottom of the first inning by getting Josh Naylor to jump to the catcher in foul territory, then strikes out Lane Thomas as he watches.

    • Jose Ramirez puts Guardians on the board

      With runners on first and third base and no outs, Jose Ramirez gave the Guardians their first run with a sacrifice fly.

    • The first two Cleveland batters reach base

      Guardians also get their first two batters on base. Steven Kwan walks and goes to third base on a double by Kyle Manzardo.

      Here Jose Ramirez comes out with zero.

    • Gavin Williams unwinds after Juan Soto’s homer

      After serving up a two-run homer to Juan Soto, Gavin Williams retired the next three batters. Aaron Judge grounded out to shortstop, Jazz Chisholm Jr. struckout and Giancarlo Stanton flew to right field.

      Guards come at the bottom of the first one.

    • Juan Soto gives Yankees a 2-0 lead

      The Yankees start Game 4 with a bang. Gleyber Torres leads off with a single, then Juan Soto crushes a high fastball for a two-run shot.

    • Aaron Boone on moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the cleaning

      Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s flip-flopping and Giancarlo Stanton at Nos. 4 and 5 in the lineup is a curious move. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters he did this to balance left- and right-handed batters through the middle and bottom of the Yankees’ batting order.

    • Will the Yankees use closer Luke Weaver tonight?

      Yankees closer Luke Weaver blew the save in Thursday’s Game 3, allowing two runs on two hits (including a home run) in 1 1/3 innings.

      It was Weaver’s third appearance in the series, including a five-out save in Game 1. After Thursday’s performance, the question was whether Weaver is tiring from the heavy postseason workload.

    • Guardians lineup, Game 4

      Same lineup as Game 3 for Cleveland. And why not, although some may wonder why David Fry doesn’t start.

      Gavin Williams will make his postseason debut for the Guardians. During the regular season, he went 3-10 with a 4.86 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 76 innings.

    • Yankees lineup, Game 4: Jazz Chisholm Jr. in clearing, Luis Gil makes first postseason start

      Jazz Chisholm Jr. is being moved to the mop-up spot despite going 2-for-12 in the first three games of the ALCS and hitting .148 in the postseason. Giancarlo Stanton drops to fifth in the batting order.

      Luis Gil starts on the mound for the first time this postseason. The rookie went 15-4 during the regular season with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings.
