MLB Playoffs: Yankees post ALCS Game 4 lineup, replace injured reliever

One night, after being on the wrong side of an all-time playoff classic, the Yankees will have to rally the troops and turn things around quickly. They don’t have time to nurse their wounds after Game 3’s brutal ending; Gavin Williams will step into the rubber for the Guardians tonight at 8:08 PM ET, with the Yankees desperately trying to prevent this ALCS from being tied at two games apiece.

They’ve announced the lineup that will lead this effort, with some big changes from yesterday’s match:

2B Gleyber Torres
RF Juan Soto
CF Aaron Judge
3BJazz Chisholm Jr.
DH Giancarlo Stanton
1B Anthony Rizzo
SS Anthony Volpe
CAustin Wells
LF Alex Verdugo

Austin Wells is back behind the plate after Jose Trevino started Game 3 with left-hander Matthew Boyd on the mound, but he drops all the way to eighth. The Yankees will be hoping that their slumping left-hander, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Wells, could get back on track with a right-hander on the mound. Chisholm will do the cleaning, with the Yankees opting to alternate lefties and righties in the middle of their lineup rather than keeping Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton back-to-back.

Anthony Rizzo also re-enters the lineup and moves up to sixth, with Jon Berti getting the start against Boyd. Rizzo did come into action in the eighth inning last night and struggled, seeing a ball bounce off his glove in the eighth and then making an error in the ninth.

Also notable is the Yankees’ roster shuffling. Ian Hamilton left last night’s match with a calf injury and has been replaced on the squad by Mark Leiter Jr:

It’s a tough blow, considering Hamilton won’t be eligible for the World Series if the Yankees advance. Leiter could suddenly find himself playing a key role if he bursts into the ALCS with the Yankee pitching staff in a precarious spot. Hamilton is out, Luke Weaver, Clay Holmes and Tommy Kahnle have been working hard and the bullpen should be in line for some work tonight as Luis Gil makes his first ever postseason start.
