Disney leak contained personal information of some cruise crew members: report

Earlier this summer, information from the Walt Disney Company was leaked, including passport numbers of cruise ship employees, revenue from Disney+ and Genie+ (now Lightning Lane), and guest data.

In July, Nullbulge, a self-proclaimed Russian hacktivist group that advocates for artists’ rights, uploaded 1.1 terabytes of Disney data to the internet via the media giant’s internal Slack channels.

Slack is an enterprise messaging app that is being used by many large companies, especially as work has shifted to hybrid and remote roles in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The software can be used on computers and smartphones.

“Consider giving away literally every bit of personal information you have, from login credentials to credit card numbers to social security numbers, as a warning to people in the future,” Nullbulge’s website said of the Disney leak.

The hacktivist group says they only hack “if you’ve committed one of our sins,” which they define as crypto promotion, AI art, and any form of theft.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from FOX Business, but a spokesperson previously told The Wall Street Journal that it would not comment on “unverified information that The Wall Street Journal allegedly obtained as a result of the illegal activities of a malicious actor.”

A spreadsheet for Genie+, the premium park pass that launched in 2021, found that Walt Disney World alone generated $724 million in pretax revenue between October 2021 and June 2024, the WSJ reported.

Internal spreadsheets also showed that Disney+, the company’s streaming entertainment app, generated more than $2.4 billion in the first quarter of the year.

Passport numbers, visa information, places of birth, physical addresses and current duties of Disney staff aboard the company’s cruises were also revealed through the Slack channels, the WSJ reports.

According to the WSJ, Disney had already told investors in a statement filed with the regulator in August that it was investigating the breach. However, the incident had no material impact on its business or financial performance, and the company did not expect it to.

According to the WSJ, Nullbulge gained access to the data through the compromised computer of a software development department manager.

“Enterprises are constantly being targeted by cyberattacks, especially when it comes to data theft via the cloud and software-as-a-service platforms,” Roei Sherman, Field CTO at Mitiga Security, told technology magazine Wired.
