  • Tropical Storm Nadine formed overnight east of Belize.
  • Heavy rain is the biggest threat from Honduras to Mexico.
  • Tropical Storm Oscar forms near Hispaniola.

The Caribbean has several tropical systems that are emerging after a short calm period in the tropics. Neither system poses an immediate threat to the United States, but Tropical Storm Nadine could cause flooding in Central America in the coming days.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued from Belize City, Belize to Cancun, on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, meaning tropical storm conditions are expected this weekend.

Nadine will be pushed westward all weekend. There is a short period through Saturday when the light could strengthen before hitting land.

The system poses no threat to the United States.

Nadine’s biggest threat is heavy rainfall in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and southern and eastern Mexico.

As it moves westward, it will bring 3 to 3 inches of rain in those states, with some communities seeing as much as 18 inches of rain.

Some areas along the Caribbean coast, from the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras, could experience gusty winds this weekend.

Tropical Storm Oscar is forming near the Greater Antilles

In addition to Nadine, another well-defined system is likely to be upgraded to a tropical storm this morning.

It is located just north of Hispaniola and close to the Turks and Caicos Islands. It will move west toward the eastern tip of Cuba this weekend, then turn north over the Bahamas over the next week.

Strong winds and some rain are the most likely threats to parts of the Bahamas through Monday and Tuesday.
