Rubio introduced an updated version of the Sunshine Protection Act in the 118e Congress last March. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

U.S. federal law continues to prohibit states from making daylight saving time permanent.

The most recent countries to abolish daylight saving time are Azerbaijan, Jordan, Namibia, Russia, Samoa, Syria, Turkey and Uruguay. Mexico abolished daylight saving time in 2022, but major cities near the U.S. border were exempt from the change. Egypt has abolished and reinstituted daylight saving time on several occasions.
