Daylight saving time 2024: when does it end?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — We’ve been slowly losing daylight since June 20 of this year. While it may not have been noticeable for most of the summer, we are definitely starting to see it now. With only two weeks of Daylight Savings Time left, we can enjoy later sunset times for now. But in two weeks you can expect our sunsets a lot of earlier.

What is daylight saving time?

Summer time is the period between the months of March and November most Americans set their clocks forward an hour. When we “leap forward” in March, it is to add more daylight in the evenings. The opposite is the case when we “fall back” in November: we gain an hour of time to ensure daylight in the morning.

When did daylight saving time start this year?

Daylight saving time started in 2024 on Sunday, March 10 around 2 a.m. This is when our clocks were moved forward one hour.

When does daylight saving time end this year?

Daylight saving time ends this year around 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 3. During that night you get an hour of sleep because our clocks ‘fall back’.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Usually yes. Hawaii and most of Arizona do too not take summer time into account. Due to the arid desert climate, Arizona chooses daylight saving time, except for the Navajo Nation. Hawaii is the only other state to skip daylight saving time. The location near the equator ensures that there is little variation in daylight hours throughout the year. There are also five other US territories that do not participate:

  • American Samoa

  • Guam

  • Northern Mariana Islands

  • Puerto Rico

  • US Virgin Islands

What does this mean for WNY?

In short, you can say goodbye to daylight. Okay, that’s an exaggeration. The amount of daylight we will see in a day will become shorter and shorter until we reach the winter solstice, which falls on Saturday, December 21 this year.
