The perfect couplewhich premiered on Thursday, September 5, followed a wedding weekend that was uprooted when a body was found on the beach. The series premiere revealed that the bride (Eva Hewson) bridesmaid, Merritt (Meghann Fahy), was the person who was murdered, but it wasn’t until the finale that fans found out who was actually responsible.

Based on Elin Hilderbrandthe novel of the same name by ‘s, The perfect couple took some creative liberties, but the revelation that Abby (Dakota Fanning) was blamed, remained basically the same. Thomas’ (Jack Reynor) woman discovered that his father, Tag (Dear Schreiber), causing Merritt to become pregnant, putting the Winbury trust in jeopardy. Abby took matters into her own hands by poisoning Merritt’s drink before drowning her.

The perfect couple also provided a resolution to most of the storylines introduced in the six-episode limited series. In a flash forward, viewers saw Amelia (Hewson) reconnect with Greer (Nicole Kidman) after deciding not to marry Benni (Billy Hoel).

Greer Winbury

Throughout the series, Greer attempted to maintain the facade of a perfect marriage in order to sell more of her books. Greer even suggested to the audience that she was the one actually financing the Winbury lifestyle, as her husband, Tag, had no money to his name, despite having a family trust.

Greer also received phone calls from someone named Broderick, leading police to believe she had hired a hitman to kill Merritt because she was having an affair with Tag. It wasn’t until she was charged with murder that Greer admitted that Broderick was her secret brother who was blackmailing her for money to pay off a gambling debt.

The Winbury matriarch eventually confessed that her love story with Tag wasn’t what it seemed. They met when Broderick helped her find clients as an escort. Tag paid for Greer’s services several times before they were married — and buried the truth about her past.

At the end of the series, Greer eventually left Tag after turning a blind eye to his many past indiscretions. Greer used her life as inspiration for what would likely become another best-seller, and six months later, she found Amelia in London. Amelia was given a copy of Greer’s book—which seemed to be based on their shared experiences—and it opened a door for them to stay in touch in the future.

Tag Winbury

It was clear from the start that Tag was hiding everything. The perfect couple confirmed that some of Tag’s unspoken faults included affairs with people within their family’s inner circle — including a former nanny. His relationship with Merritt, however, is where things went too far. Tag refused to leave Greer for Merritt, leaving her stranded where Abby subsequently drowned her.

Tag denied any involvement with Merritt until he had no choice but to confess. He also brought up his family’s private affairs at a book event, which tarnished his public image. By the end of the show, Tag had come to terms with the loss of Greer and planned to remain in their island home.

Amelia Bags

Marrying into the Winbury family wasn’t Amelia’s only concern during her wedding weekend. Amelia had already had doubts about whether Benji was the one, and the postponement gave her the chance to finally accept that. First, Amelia found out that Merritt was having an affair with Tag, which led to a falling out between the best friends.

Amelia felt guilty about her last conversation with Merritt and tried to solve her murder as a way to cope. Eventually, she discovered that one of her mother’s pills had gone missing and was found in Merritt’s system. By connecting the dots, authorities realized that Abby had gotten it from Thomas and Amelia was there to see Merritt’s killer arrested.

In her personal life, Amelia spent the entire season dealing with her feelings for Benji’s best man, Shooter (Ishaan Khattar). Amelia and Shooter had a past that no one knew about, which led to the bride briefly giving in to those feelings. Benji saw the couple kiss, and by the end of their time in Nantucket, the wedding was called off.

Amelia and Benji parted on good terms while The perfect couple hinted at a possible reconciliation for her and Shooter in the future. Six months later, she was seen at a London zoo, where Amelia and Greer met again.

Benji Winbury

The Winbury middle child was blind to what was going on around him for most of the season. While Benji knew about Tag’s affair with Merritt, he didn’t know about Amelia’s doubts about their future. Benji wasn’t happy when he found Amelia and Shooter together, but he accepted the fact that his relationship wasn’t working.

The series finale sees Benji saying goodbye to Amelia and returning to his chaotic family.

Merritt Monaco

The story behind Merritt’s murder was told primarily through flashbacks. Although Merritt had a certain charisma, she wasn’t the party girl she wanted others to believe. That’s why Merritt’s affair with Tag was so unusual for her. She thought there was a future for them, but when she realized there wasn’t, Merritt decided to keep the baby. That decision set her on her heels.

The night of her death, Tag made it clear to Merritt that he wanted her to abort their unborn child. She confided in Amelia, who was less than pleased with the situation. Merritt went on to have a conversation with Thomas’ mistress Isabel (Isabelle Adjani) about her plight, but it was ultimately her conversation with Abby that took a turn.

Abby laced a barbiturate with a drink she gave Merritt and then drowned her.

Abby Winbury

Although she seemed oblivious to what was going on around her, the pregnant Abby knew that Thomas was having an affair with Isabel. She also knew that Merritt was pregnant with Tag’s baby, meaning that Thomas would have to wait another 18 years before he could access the money in his family’s trust fund.

Abby took a pill she found in Thomas’ stash to drug Merritt. She then murdered Merritt before asking the family’s housekeeper to destroy the evidence. Abby was arrested for the murder after police connected the dots.

Thomas Winbury

In addition to being unfaithful to his wife, Thomas was also in debt. He owed his girlfriend millions and relied on Tag’s trust. When Merritt’s pregnancy threatened that, Thomas tried to shoot her, but ultimately didn’t. Isabel stopped him and they left for a hotel, where Abby took the opportunity to finish the job by killing Merritt.

Thomas seemed unaware that when he stole a pill from Amelia’s mother, he gave his wife the means to commit a crime. The series ended with Isabel confronting Thomas at his family’s home because he accused her of murder.

Will Winbury

As the youngest in the family, Will was unaware of most of the secrets his parents tried to bury. He discovered through the murder investigation that Tag arranged for his nanny to disappear from his life. Will also knew that Merritt was pregnant with Tag’s baby before her death and offered to help.

Merritt was happy for Will’s support, but he had nothing to do with her death. He ended the series on a positive note when he spent time with Police Chief Dan Carter’s (Michael Beach) daughter, Chloe (Mia Isaac).

Shooter Dival

The only reason Shooter appeared guilty was because of a wire transfer he made to Greer. Shooter even tried to leave the island to avoid answering questions, but he couldn’t hide from the truth. It turned out that Shooter had no idea at the time what he was giving Greer money for. Greer explained to the authorities that she had to pay for a debut for her brother.

Shooter still seemed to be out of the picture when the series ended. He was no longer a person of interest, which meant he could go home. Before he did, Shooter had a talk with Amelia about their complicated relationship. Amelia made it clear that she needed to work on herself first — but the open ending set up a possible reconciliation between the two in the future.
