New York Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman was taken off the field on a backboard and transported to a hospital after a collision against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Newman remained on the sideline for several minutes after the collision in the third quarter. Players from both teams surrounded Newman as play came to a standstill for several minutes. He was placed on a board by medical staff and taken from the field by paramedics on a cart.

NBC’s Melissa Stark reported that medical staff removed his face mask while attending to him on the field and that he was conscious. Stark later reported that Newman had movement in his extremities and was transported to a local hospital in Pittsburgh. The Jets ruled him out of the game due to a neck injury.

The injury occurred in the third quarter after Aaron Rodgers intercepted a pass from Garrett Wilson. Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. intercepted the ball and returned it 41 yards to the Jets’ 1-yard line.

Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen made contact with Newman (No. 65, above) while blocking the return. Newman tumbled to the sideline and lay there until he was taken off the field on a stretcher.

Play resumed after Newman was taken off the field with the Steelers ahead, 16-15. Further details about Newman’s condition were initially unclear.
