Mets fans watch team lose to Dodgers in NLCS during a watch party at Citi Field

New York Mets fans were disappointed but not surprised when their team lost 10-5 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night. They accepted the loss after a magical postseason as part of their Blue-Orange fandom as they vowed to root against their crosstown rivals in the World Series.

“It’s always difficult when you get so close. It breaks your heart because you invest so much in your team throughout the season, through the highs and the lows,” Walter Nilsson, a 60-year-old Long Island resident, told The Post at a viewing party attended by thousands at Citi Field Sunday.

“When the playoffs came around and we got to see a Subway Series, things got really exciting. It’s extra salt on the wound that the Yankees made it to the final series and we didn’t.

“But that’s what being a Mets fan is all about: picking yourself up the next year and believing that this is it.”

The team hosted a viewing party on its home field in Queens for Game 6 of the NLCS, in which the Mets played an away game against the Dodgers.

But late in the game, when it looked like a Mets loss was inevitable, fans poured out of the venue for the last time this year.

Sunnyside resident Franky Bwire was once again faced with the crushing feeling of defeat.

“I’m quite depressed. It’s what I expected, but I’m still very disappointed,” said the 33-year-old fan. “We had the talent, we had the management, we had all the pieces in place. But we just couldn’t take it home, and it hurts. We just weren’t good enough again.”

With the New York Yankees clinching a spot in the World Series on Saturday night after a dramatic victory over the Cleveland Guardians, Mets fans said they had no choice but to cheer for the team that had just eliminated their ball club.

“Dodgers all the way, honey. Five minutes ago I wanted them to burn in hell, but from now until the end of October, I’m a diehard LA fan,” Joe Viviani, a 64-year-old Long Island resident, told The Post. “I hope they win in four.”

“F-k no, I’m not for the Yankees. I don’t really like LA right now because they just gave us a beating, but I would at least get some satisfaction from seeing them do the same to those full-fledged Yankees,” says Lisa Krueger, 54, of Manhattan. .

And Queens native Tim Murray vowed he would “never root for the Yankees.”

“The Dodgers denied us a Subway Series in which we would have shut down the Yankees themselves, so now we’re leaving it up to them to do the work,” the 50-year-old claimed.

The Mets struggled to start the season, but made an incredible run to reach the postseason.

The team then topped the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies in the first two rounds before losing to superstar Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers.

“Listen, the better team goes to the World Series, and my hat goes off to LA,” said Luis Adames, 42, of Washington Heights. “But my hat goes off to the Mets because they fought and fought and wouldn’t give up, and they got us to this point. And if they can do it this year, they have the formula to do it next year, so let’s get going!”

And Long Islander Ted Bureau is already ready for next year.

“I love this team. They gave us a great ride,” the 34-year-old told The Post.

“Who would have thought in June or July that we would ever get to this point? I give them all the credit in the world. Yes, I’m disappointed, but these guys played with heart and soul,” he said.

“They gave us so much hope, and I’m proud of all the fans who supported them. On to 2025.”
