Election 2024: Trump’s town hall turns into an impromptu concert after medical incidents

OAKS, Pa. (AP) — Donald Trump ‘s town hall in the Suburbs of Philadelphia turned into an impromptu concert Monday after the former president was interrupted twice by medical emergencies in the room.

The Republican presidential candidate paused during a question-and-answer session as a doctor in the room treated the first person to have a medical problem. After a second emergency halted the discussion led by South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, Trump stopped asking questions. He and Noem said it was warm in the room, and Trump asked about air conditioning.

“They probably can’t afford it in this economy, sir,” Noem joked.

During the first intermission, Trump requested that “Ave Maria” be played, and he was answered with an instrumental version of the song. During the second incident, he said he meant Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti’s version of the song. It was quickly coordinated.

When Noem announced that the second person was moving, Trump spoke for a few more minutes before calling for music to be played, while many in the crowd lingered, unsure if he had finished speaking.

“Those two people who went down are patriots,” Trump said after the music. “We love them. And thanks to them we got great music, right?”

Trump suggested they could end the evening with the audience in their seats and enjoy some musical selections instead of hearing him answer more questions.

He called for the “YMCA” of the Village People and it sounded over the loudspeakers, the usual signal that Trump has finished speaking and is ready to leave. But he stayed on stage.

More music, more dance.

“No one is leaving,” Trump said. “What’s going on?”

More music was played – and for about 40 minutes it didn’t stop.

Trump bounced and rocked onstage to an eclectic playlist of songs including Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Rufus Wainwright’s cover of “Hallelujah” and Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain.”

Many of his supporters headed for the exit, but some stayed until the end. The scene was reminiscent of Trump’s winters at Mar-a-Lago, his South Florida estate, where he likes to DJ and hold court with the wealthy members of his private club.

Finally, Trump left the stage as “Memory” from the musical “Cats” played.

Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s national press secretary, published a photo of Trump from the side of the stage on the social media site “DJ TRUMP!” she wrote.
