Less light as we say goodnight to sunsets after 6pm this week

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The last sunset from 6 p.m. until 2025 is almost here.

For those mourning the dwindling sunlit hours, I’m sorry: you only have six days left with sunsets at 6pm or later.

According to Almanac.com, Saturday, October 26 will be the last 6pm sunset of 2024.

The sun sets on Sunday, October 27 at 5:59 PM

Bring on the tears and the ‘Game of Thrones’ theme song, because it’s winter is coming.

The clocks will turn back on November 3 as Daylight Savings Time ends, reducing our sunlight by an hour and putting sunsets in the 4 p.m. range.

The days will gradually become shorter as we approach the winter solstice on December 21, the longest night of the year. Almanac has the sun rising at 7:15 am and setting at 4:33 pm – just nine hours and 18 minutes of light.

But after the solstice is over, light will slowly creep back in as we move away from the dark depths of the winter months.

Daylight saving time starts again on March 9, 2025, dramatically increasing the amount of sunshine we will experience. On that fateful day, the sun rises at 7:15 a.m. and doesn’t set until 6:57 p.m.

For comparison, on March 8, 2025, the sun will rise at 6:16 a.m. and set at 5:56 p.m.

As for why we use Daylight Savings Time, here’s the explanation: Setting the clocks forward an hour in the spring gives us more daylight during summer evenings, while turning our clocks back an hour in the fall gives us more daylight during winter mornings, according to the Ancient farmer’s almanac.

Hold on tight, Staten Island – the dark may come, but the light will always follow.
