This is what you can expect in New York

(NEXSTAR) – This winter New York will bring above-average temperatures, but precipitation will be average, according to new forecasts for the upcoming season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released its winter outlook for 2024-2025, highlighting a “slowly developing” La Niña that could affect weather across the country from December through February.

“This winter, an emerging La Niña is expected to impact upcoming winter patterns, especially our precipitation forecasts,” said Jon Gottschalck, chief of the Operational Prediction Branch of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

This winter may be less predictable than last winter. This is why

According to NOAA forecasts, temperatures in New York are likely to be warmer than normal between December 2024 and February 2025. NOAA estimates there is a 40-50% chance that temperatures will be above average in the state, with less certainty in the state. Precipitation is expected to be normal and drought is unlikely.

The Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes regions are likely to see above-average precipitation this season, meaning states like Michigan, Ohio and Indiana could see more rain and snowfall.

Washington, Oregon and northern Idaho could also experience a wet winter.

Meanwhile, drier than normal conditions could affect the South and Southwest, including parts of Florida, Georgia, Arizona and New Mexico. The Southern Plains (Texas, Oklahoma and a small portion of southwestern Kansas) may also see less than average rainfall.

As for temperatures, NOAA predicts they will be warmer than average across much of the southern US

This warmth is expected along the Gulf Coast – in states like Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama – and extends up the East Coast through Georgia, the Carolinas and as far north as New England. Warmer than normal temperatures are also likely in parts of the Great Lakes region and Pennsylvania.

On the other hand, cooler than average temperatures are expected for the Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains. Temperatures may be below average in states such as Washington, Oregon, Montana and North Dakota, as well as some areas in western Alaska.

For regions struggling with drought, the prospects offer good and bad news. Drought relief is expected in parts of Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

However, drought conditions are likely to persist in the central and southern plains. Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma are expected to see continued dry conditions with little relief in sight.

Parts of the Southwest, including Arizona and New Mexico, could also experience continued drought, while the Gulf Coast is expected to experience new drought conditions.

While the forecasts give us an idea of what kind of trends to expect this winter, they are not day-by-day predictions. The forecasts reflect the probability of seasonal temperatures and precipitation, but cannot predict specific weather events. So be sure to check your local forecast.
